4 Days From Marrakech To Merzouga Itinerary
.
Day 1: Marrakech – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Dades Gorge
Total driving time: Approximately 6 hours
Total distance: Approximately 353 km
Start in Marrakech and start early in the day – and begin your trip by driving 4 hours towards Ait Ben Haddou via the Tizi-N-Tichka Pass in the Atlas Mountains.
Ait Benhaddou has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 and was once an important stop along the caravan route between Marrakech and the Sahara desert.
Ait Benhaddou Kasbah, an ancient fortified city also known as ksar (castle) has been the main site for various blockbuster movies such as Jesus of Nazareth, Gladiator, The Mummy, Prince of Persia as well as the TV series, Game of Thrones, and many more.
Have lunch at one of the quaint little restaurants such as the La Fibule D’Or Restaurant where you can have a nice, quiet spot with great views of the Kasbah. Food prices here are said to be quite reasonable and the food is pretty great too.
Some other restaurants that are available for lunch at Ait Ben Haddou include:
After lunch, make your way to Ouarzazate, half an hour from Ait Ben Haddou, and check out Kasbah Taourirt – an impressive monument that looks like a sandcastle made of adobe.
This 17th-century house is adorned with geometrical ornaments on the walls but do not expect much as most of the rooms are empty as it has been abandoned for a long time now.
If you’re a movie buff, you will love exploring the film studios in Ouarzazate where you can find sets from various films like Mission Cleopatra, the Mummy, and a citadel from the well-known TV series Game of Thrones!
After, continue your journey and head to Boulmane Dades, a photo-worthy city where houses are built on top of each other. Drive along the Route of a Thousand Kasbahs that follows the valley with great viewpoints to admire the beauty that surrounds you.
Be sure to also make a quick stop and check out the beauty contrasting the dryness of the rocks and the quaint little Berber villages snuggled in between the palm trees and oleanders amid a lush oasis.
Before reaching Dades Gorge, we recommend that you make another quick pit stop at Monkey Fingers, an unusual rock formation that has been eroded by the elements over the years that resulted in oddly shaped boulders and conic stones that are attached to the cliffs.
Upon arriving at Dades Gorge, you can check out Hotel Babylon Dades for a comfortable, good night’s stay or if you prefer a more luxurious stay, give Hotel Xaluca Dades or Ksar Sultan Dades a try.
These hotels also may have Berber drum sessions that you might be interested in so be sure to ask your hotel the details if you want to check them out on time. You can also take a quick walk to the hill and check out the famous mountain road viewpoint to stretch your feet after the drive.
Day 2: Dades Gorge – Todra Gorge – Merzouga
Total driving time: Approximately 4 hours
Total distance: Approximately 275 km
Rise and shine for a brand new adventure!
Head towards Tinghir on your way to Todra Gorge, a city that is flanked with views to die for. A green oasis, adobe villages, and dry hills frame this little town in all its beauty and are known for its unique walking trails – great for a quick stroll if you have time!
Upon arriving at Todra Gorges, you will find that the temperature may feel much cooler; perfect for a nice walk along the river that passes by tall cliffs near the gorge. However, there isn’t much to see here so if you prefer, explore a little longer or continue your journey to save time.
For lunch, be sure to stop by the town of Rissani where you’ll get to explore the culture and a day in the lives of the southern Moroccan people. Take a walk in the Souk and take in the experience that comes with their colorful shops, traditions, and smells as you wander through the streets.
Also, when in Rissani, try the Berber Pizza! It’s similar to a calzone pie filled with minced meat, Moroccan spices, and tomatoes. You can find them in restaurants like La Baraka or Panorama Restaurant.
Other restaurants that are great for lunch include:
After lunch, make your way to Merzouga and get ready for your camel tour! Enjoy some sweet mint tea – known as the drink of friendship – and hospitality at the pickup location (usually a hotel) and wait for the camel tour to be ready!
Enjoy a fun ride on the camels as you head to your campsite nestled in the dunes, while your luggage takes a wild ride on a 4WD to your accommodation for the night. With sand as far as your eyes can see, the camel ride is the perfect opportunity to enjoy these picturesque views.
The camel ride will take approximately 40 minutes but is sure to give you a memorable experience as you bop and waddle on the humps of a camel in the Sahara. Won’t that be a fun story to tell?
However, the journey can get quite uncomfortable as the dry weather can be tiring and dusty. Remember to pack a shawl or a face mask to keep the heat and sand off your head and nose as well as a bottle of water to keep you hydrated at all times.
As you arrive at Erg Chebbi Camp, you will be welcomed by a stunning display of light and white tents, settled in a dip between two dunes that offer luxury at your service.
They have tents that accommodate up to 4 people and come equipped with toilets and showers for you to freshen up.
After getting settled, take a walk and wait for the sun to set over the dunes.
With golden sands as far as the eyes can see; as the sun sets behind the dunes, enjoy the display of colors, and the sky transitions into the starry blue sky that stretches above you.
If you have some time to spare, don’t forget to try your hands at sandboarding in Merzouga too!
Usually, dinner will be served in the middle of the tent area where all the guests are invited to gather around a fire pit and meet other travelers and guests. Enjoy a drum session with your new friends under the stars and have a good night’s rest before your next adventure for Day 3!
Day 3: Merzouga – Khamlia – Draa Valley – Ouarzazate
Total driving time: Approximately 5 hours 30 minutes
Total distance: Approximately 370 km
As they say, the early bird gets the worm. Early mornings will be specially rewarded with a magnificent sunrise over the top of the dunes in the Sahara. Take a small hike up a dune, and over the rolling hills of sand, enjoy the sunrise while taking in the fresh morning air in the desert.
Have breakfast and get on the camel’s back to make your way to the hotel where you can freshen up and shower before beginning your journey back to Marrakech.
You will be heading to Ouarzazate via Rissani, where you will be able to explore the traditional souks which are considered among the largest in Morocco. Along the way, we suggest making a quick stop in Khamlia, a small village – home to the songs of Gnawa, a Moroccan music style.
As you proceed, be sure to also slow down and enjoy the views that the Draa Valley has to offer with its palm trees and views that will charm your socks off! They look like a movie set in ancient Egyptian times with lush palm trees and little oases.
You can have lunch in Rissani or nearby the Draa Valley in N’kob where you will have an opportunity to try food made by the locals and try homemade Berber food. Try Restaurant Ennakhile – raved for their unique dining experience with the freshest ingredients.
Other restaurants you could check out in the Draa Valley area include:
After lunch, proceed to Ouarzazate and arrive sometime in the evening, just in time for dinner and some rest at your preferred hotel. If you’re looking for somewhere simple to rest for the night, you can check out Riad Dar Barbara. Some other hotels include:
- Hotel Riad Amlal (Standard)
- Riad Dar Chamaa (Luxurious)
Day 4: Ouarzazate – Atlas Mountains – Marrakech
Total driving time: Approximately 3 hours 40 minutes
Total distance: Approximately 194 km
If you like, you could spend a little extra time at the biggest studio in Africa – Atlas Studios are also known as the Hollywood of Africa, after breakfast before continuing your journey back to Marrakech.
The admission fees for Atlas Studios in Ouarzazate is as follows:
General Admission: 50 DH (USD 5.50)
Add-On for Kingdom of Heaven Set and Museum: Additional 40 DH (USD 4.40)
Passing by the High Atlas Mountains on your way back, you will have a chance to pass through this mountain pass that is a gateway to the Sahara desert and lies above the Marrakech plains. Elevated 2 260 m above sea level, it is also one of the most difficult roads to drive on.
You will also get to experience the Berber villages along the way back to Marrakech. This marks the end of your 4 days desert trip from Marrakech to Merzouga and back!
In Marrakech, if you don’t already have accommodation, be sure to check out some of the best ones here for the rest of your stay in town!
Is There Another Way To Reach The Desert Camp Instead Of Camels?
Some people may not be very fond of riding camels so in case you’re wondering if there’s another way to get to your campsite, we’re here to tell you – yes, there is.
You can hop on a 4-wheel drive – just be sure to let your guide know what your preferences are before reaching your pick-up location so that the necessary preparations can be made accordingly before you arrive.
If you’re keen to try camel riding but worry about hurting the camels, you can do your part to ensure that their welfare is preserved while still helping the villagers generate income used to feed and care for the animals.
An important way you can help is by refusing bad working conditions for the animals.
Here are some things you can avoid:
- Do not ride animals that appear to be sick or injured
- Acknowledge and ask a guide to mediate on your behalf when handlers treat animals poorly or aggressively.
- Avoid purchasing drinks, souvenirs, or other items from a vendor with a sad animal next to them
- Ask for recommendations before participating in a trek or activities that use camels.
