Key lime pie is an absolutely must-try dessert when you’re visiting the Florida Keys. Like a poboy in New Orleans or a dish of real pasta in Italy, your trip just won’t be complete without it.

There are a lot of places selling key lime pies in Key West (no surprise there!) A traveler could easily get overwhelmed by all this choice, but that won’t be a problem for you. I’ve chosen the cream (pun intended) of the crop so that you’ll have nothing but great experiences when you’re hankering for a dessert on your vacation. Let’s go!

The pie might be the main attraction, but it certainly doesn’t end there for Kermit’s. Key lime pie lovers can also treat themselves to key lime cookies, key lime juice, key lime jelly, and much more there.

About that pie though – first off, it’s amazing. Anyone who would like to try some less traditional variants will also be happy with Kermit’s – the coconut key lime pie is absolutely to die for.

You will definitely want some more even after you’ve left Key West.

Normally, that’d be a problem. Not so, however! Kermit’s is happy to deliver frozen key lime pies (along with the rest of their range) anywhere within the continental United States. This is one your family and friends back home can experience, not just have to hear you talk about.

Mattheessen’s has a pretty strong claim to the best key lime pie on the island. The secret is their thick, homemade graham cracker crust, which holds the tight filling.

You also can’t afford to miss their frozen key lime pies – they’re put on a stick and coated in dark, Belgian chocolate.

If you tell me you don’t want one, I won’t believe you!

Mattheessen’s owned and operated by the Mattheessen family, who moved to Key West in 1993. If you’re in the mood for ice cream with your pie, you’ve come to the right place. Mattheessen’s has 23 different flavors, including key lime (of course), dulce de leche, and Cuban coffee. Take your pick!

Better Than Sex has a slightly notorious reputation in the best possible way. The award-winning desserts served up here all have names tinged with the erotic: Morning After, Peanut Butter Perversion, and, our target, Kinky-er Key West Lime Pie.

This combines all the delicious tartness and sweetness you’d expect from a key lime pie with elegant, upscale presentation. This place has a sultry aesthetic – all luxurious red walls and mood lighting – that aims to create an intimate dining experience.

For this reason, Better Than Sex does not take small children or any parties larger than four. Oh, keep in mind that it’s not open on Mondays or Tuesdays.

The name of the Key Lime Pie Bakery tells you exactly what to expect and, trust me, those expectations are not going to be disappointed. Key lime pie is their passion, and it shows in the taste. The tartness and sweetness are perfectly balanced and held together in a deliciously light, flaky crust.

They’ve also branched out into a wide range of other key lime goodies, like the key lime cookies, key lime saltwater taffy, and the incomparable Tortuga coconut Caribbean rum cake. Remember to buy enough to take home to your friends!

6.Blue Heaven

Blue Heaven has quite a history – it has been a dancehall and brothel and at one time hosted cock fights and boxing matches refereed by none other than Ernest Hemingway.

Though it’s not quite as rough and ready as that these days, the food is still top-notch. With a buttery, graham cracker crust, freshly squeezed lime juice, sweetened condensed milk, and lots of meringue (to quote their menu), the key lime pie at Blue Heaven is the bee’s knees and deserves its fame.

It comes with a little more meringue on top than a lot of other places, so make sure you come ready to eat! Be careful not to miss it though – it’s easy to walk past this place without noticing. Don’t make that mistake!

Oh, and The passionfruit cashew cheesecake is also just awesome, just in case you happen not to be in the mood for key lime pie.

7.Moondog Cafe & Bakery

Moondog Cafe & Bakery features a cool, relaxed cafe with a great bakery to boot. They don’t specialize in key lime pies, unlike some of the other places on this list, but once you taste it, you’ll have no doubts whatsoever that they know what they’re doing with cream, limes, and crust.

The creaminess of the filling and the delightful meringue on the top make it one of the best desserts you’ll ever taste. While you’re there, you can also enjoy vegan croissants, zucchini bread, and carrot cake, among other things.

No trip to the Florida Keys is complete without at least one sampling of the famous key lime pie. Any of the spots mentioned in this list offers a high-quality product guaranteed, so you can be sure you’re getting the best of this sensational local favorite. Bon appetit!
