Hiking Outfits For The Fall And Winter: Tops & Jackets
Long-Sleeved Tops
As a base for my hiking outfit, I like to start off with a good moisture-wicking long-sleeved top.
I prefer Merino wool ones – they move sweat away from the skin and keep me dry and comfy while I’m on the trails. Grab a jacket if you need extra warmth!

Weatherproof Jackets
A weatherproof jacket is essential for fall and winter hiking to protect you from rain, wind, or snow.
I like hooded jackets with a high collar to help keep the cold air out. Zippered pockets are great too for keeping small essentials like gloves and snacks.
You may need to layer up depending on the weather so choose a size that gives you enough room.

Cozy Shackets
I love shirt-jackets for fall hikes or warmer winter days.
They offer decent warmth without the bulk of a heavy coat – and I definitely love the rustic, outdoorsy vibe they give off!
Throw them over your base layer and you’re all set! If you’re going for longer hikes and it starts to feel too warm, shackets are light enough to be packed away.

Comfy Sweaters
Cozy sweaters are another outerwear option you can consider for your hiking outfits for the fall and winter. They’re effortlessly cute – perfect for all your hiking IG stories! 😉
As always, layering is key. Wear the sweater over a cotton or thermal tee, so you can always take it off if it gets too warm.
Bring along a weatherproof jacket in case you need it.

Warm Puffer Jackets
A warm puffer jacket is great for cold-weather hikes, offering insulation without sacrificing style!
It’s lightweight enough to carry in your hiking backpack but cozy enough to keep you snug when temperatures drop.
Pro tip: choose a water-resistant puffer for added protection against unexpected rain or snow on the trails.

Hiking Tights
If you’re new to hiking, my biggest tip is to pay lots of attention to your lower half. Your legs are doing most of the heavy lifting on your hike, after all!
As someone who’s had her fair share of chaffed thighs, trust me when I say good hiking tights will go a long way. I love them because they offer lots of flexibility – and they’re super comfy too!

Hiking Pants
I’ve been asked, “Do you really need hiking pants?” and my honest answer is that they’re absolutely wonderful to have if you’re looking for hiking outfits for the fall and winter. These seasons require a bit more specialized hiking gear.
Hiking pants are durable and flexible, but most importantly, they’re also highly breathable.
The moisture-wicking fabric is important for moving moisture away from your skin, keeping you nice and dry on your hike.

Ski Pants
For winter hikes, ski pants are another alternative you can consider – especially if you’re hiking in snowy or wet conditions.
They’re designed to keep you warm and dry with waterproof materials and insulated layers.

Hiking Outfits For The Fall And Winter: Accessories
Hiking Shoes
Hiking shoes are perfect for day hikes and warmer conditions.
They’re flexible and breathable, which means you can enjoy a more natural stride when you’re off on the trails.
Just keep in mind that they may not offer enough ankle support and protection for long treks or challenging terrain – in those cases, hiking boots are best.

Hiking Boots
Hiking boots are your best friend for tackling rugged trails and unpredictable weather.
They’re designed to provide great ankle support and stability. A solid pair of boots offers excellent traction, making steep ascents and descents easier and safer.
Remember to break in your boots before a big adventure to avoid blisters – nothing ruins a hike faster than sore feet! >.<

Beanies
Beanies are a great accessory for staying warm and stylish during fall and winter hikes. They’re especially handy for some much-needed ear coverage on extra-chilly days.
Style-wise, I love nature-inspired tones that blend in with the changing landscapes in these seasons!

Gloves
When hitting the trails in colder weather, a solid pair of gloves will keep your fingers warm while allowing you to grip trekking poles with ease.
I recommend gloves made from insulated, moisture-wicking materials to keep your hands dry and toasty.
This bit is optional but I’m all for touchscreen-compatible gloves. You’ll see plenty of breathtaking sights and snapping photos along the way becomes a breeze!

Hiking Outfits For The Fall And Winter: Final Wrap-Up
See how easy it is to put together hiking outfits for the fall and winter that are stylish AND practical? With just a little planning, you can look great while staying comfortable on your adventures.
The weather can get unpredictable in these seasons, so I definitely recommend going with layers that you can take off or add on as you go along your hike. This way, you can easily adjust to temperature changes as you gain elevation or take breaks.
It’s also a good idea to go with waterproof clothing and accessories to protect against unexpected rain or snow!
Now you’re all set to hit the trails in style. Stay adventurous, stay comfy, and happy hiking!
