So, Ger and I have been planning a trip to Japan soon, and I’ve heard so much about this Onsen concept that is extremely popular over there.
As always, you know I love to completely immerse myself in the culture of whichever place I’m in.

An onsen is such a great way to rejuvenate, and Hiroshima’s onsen natural hot spring is just one of a kind. It’s such a great activity that the whole family can do as well!
Don’t worry if you’ve got young children with you; there’s no age limit to going in an onsen, and that’s what is so great about it!
Hiroshima’s onsen is meant for you to feel like a new person when you get out of the onsen.

If you’re traveling with family and would like to visit some public onsens for you and your family to go to, here are some of the popular ones!
1. Takamiya Yunomori Hot Spring
At Takamiya Tunomori Hot Spring, you can enjoy up to 6 historical natural hot springs and spend the day as long as you like.
This hot spring is known to be a place that has been helping people with skin diseases, eye problems, and rehabilitation purposes.
If you’re visiting, ensure it’s not the 2nd Tuesday of every month, as it closes for maintenance.
The entrance price is 800 yen for adults and 400 yen for children, and children below 3 have free admission.
Be sure to bring your towels here, as towels are not included. Reviews say that they particularly enjoy their trip here.
2. Miharashi Hot Spring みはらしの湯
Miharashi is known to be the day spa in Ina and has a magnificent view of the Southern Alps and Ina city.
You can choose to soak in the large indoor hot spring pool or at the outdoor bath that’s in the shape of Hachijiojima.
The bathing fee is 600 yen for adults and 400 yen for children. Do not that they are closed on every 1st, 3rd, and 5th Tuesday.
To be safe, maybe just skip Tuesdays and go on another day.
The only thing is it’s a little bit away from Hiroshima, but it’s definitely worth the visit. Besides, you’re only in Hiroshima once. Might as well make it worthwhile.
If you guys have rented a car on your trip, it’s about 25 minutes away from Miharakui IC of Sanyo Expressway.
3. Hibagonkyo Onsen Suzuran Hot Spring
Right next to Hiba Dogoyama Kogen Inn, the hot spring is a place where you can go in and relax with the flowing hot spring water.
At only $99 per night, you can stay in and also use the hot spring next door. Though nothing fancy, it’s a place to rejuvenate yourself and the whole family.
Enjoy a simple meal at the restaurant after you’ve already had a dip in the hot tub.
When you’re getting ready to go use the onsen, don’t forget to bring along:
- Small change
- Cooling towel
- Large towel
- Change of clothes
- Tote bag to insert your belongings

Looking for the best ryokan in Hiroshima where you can go skiing? Here are 2 of the most popular skiing resorts in Hiroshima.
4. Megahiraonsen Megahira Ski Area
What better way to beat two birds with one stone? You can visit Megahiraonsen Magahira Ski Area for skiing and dipping yourself in a hot tub right after with the whole family!
Mostly known for its skiing facility, it has a hot spring facility that’s connected to the slopes that are called Kuvele Yoshikazu, which has 13 hot spring baths.
Dip in after a long day skiing with the family. On average, the admission ticket to the property is 5,300 yen for adults and 4,300 yen for children.
5. Megahira Onsen Quelle Yoshiwa
At the doorstep of the Mountains, Megahira Onsen Quelle Yoshiwa offers ski-to-door access easily for you and your family to go.
This 3-star hotel serves authentic Japanese cuisine, and all their rooms come with a flat-screen TV.
This place offers a great wellness facility that you’re able to do with your family.
For a family of four, you can book this place that comes with 4 futon beds and is inclusive of breakfast and dinner.
If you’d like to go skiing with the family, ski equipment is also available for rent at the property.
They have a hot spring indoors and outdoors that everyone can go and enjoy to relax.
Budget Ryokan with Onsen (2-Star Hotel)
6. Gokurakuji Mountain Onsen Arcadia Village
A reasonably priced local Hiroshima onsen ryokan is a great place to spend overnight to rest or to go dip in the hot spring in the countryside.
The public onsen is open from 7 am – 8 pm every day at a fee of 550 yen for adults, and 310 yen for children below 12 years old.
You can also rent a towel there if you’re not planning to bring your own towel for a small rent fee of 150 yen per towel.
However, for this particular property, they do not allow people with tattoos to be bathing on the premises.
You have an option to choose a Western Japanese room or a traditional Japanese room for your vacation.
7. Yuki Onsen Yuki Lodge
Yuki Onsen has a historical value to it as it’s said to have been discovered 1500 years ago.
When you’re there, soothe your mind, body, and soul while looking at the Mizuuchi River.
Every room is air-conditioned and has a flat-screen TV and some rooms include a seating area for you and your family to relax after a tiring day.
Depending on what type of view you’d like, you get to choose between a river or a garden.
At Yuki Onsen, you’d also be able to experience traditional Kagura. Kagura is a traditional performing arts that happens twice a month on a Sunday.
While discovering Hiroshima on foot, especially during the Summer, it’s great to bring along a fan that you can put around your neck to keep you cool.
8. Jukeiso
Located on the hill, Jukeiso overlooks the majestic Itsukushima-jinja Shrine, a Unesco World Heritage Site.
This ryokan offers public and private onsen that you could use for the whole family.
For more authentic and traditional Japanese-style rooms for the family to experience, Jukeiso can be a top choice.
You’d also be able to get a free shuttle to and from the Miyajima Ferry terminal so you can easily get around.
For a sightseeing experience, it’s a 10-minute walk to Hokuku Shrine and Goju-no-To Pagoda.
Everyone that stayed here loved that they particularly woke up to the sea view and the food served at the restaurant was exceptional.
9. Dormy Inn Hiroshima Annex
Dormy Inn Hiroshima Annex has a lot of popular attractions nearby which makes it a great place to stay in.
Some of the top attractions are the Hiroshima Danbara Shopping Centre, Hiroshima City Minami Ward Community Cultural Center, and Myoei-ji Temple.
All the rooms are air-conditioned rooms, with a flat-screen TV. This ryokan also offers hot spring baths and saunas.
It’s also a reputable hotel chain in Japan under Dromy Inn.
The natural hot spring bath, considered to be the best onsen in Hiroshima, ‘Geishu no Yu’ is on the top floor, and you’d be able to enjoy and appreciate the view.
However, they do separate the women’s and men’s hot spring baths to give more privacy.
10. Ryoso Kawaguchi
Wake up to a beautiful view of the five-story pagoda of Itsukushima Shrine when you stay at Ryoso Kawaguchi.
This beautiful Ryokan offers a Japanese-style accommodation that offers a free shuttle to Miyajima Ferry terminal.
Ryosa Kawaguchi has also been awarded for 3 years consecutively as TripAdvisor’s Traveler’s Choice Awards under Top 25 B&Bs and Inns in Japan, a Hiroshima onsen hotel.
There are 2 hot spring baths that you can use that are open from 4 pm to 11 pm.
There’s 1 small hot spring bath that can be used for 1-2 people, and the larger one can fit about 4-5 people.
Although breakfast and dinner do not come with reservations, you can still get them at the Ryokan at an additional charge.
You can also have an option to choose between a Western or Japanese cuisine to be served.
Momijidani Park is also just a 10-minute walk from the Ryokan that you and your entire family can enjoy.
Middle Range Ryokans With Onsen (3-Star Hotel)
11. Iwaso
Being located on the World Heritage Miyajima Island, Iwaso is a great place to stay in Miyajima Ryokans to learn more about the historical background.
Founded way back in 1854, this historical place features Japanese-style accommodation with lush greenery and the coolness of the mountain streams.
Families can enjoy the indoor or outdoor hot spring baths, and the parents can request massages to offload that stress.
Every room is air-conditioned with tatami and Japanese futon bedding to sleep on.
Depending on which room you book, there are rooms that are in the main building and a cottage that has a shared bathroom and toilets.
For a family activity, you can enjoy singing in the karaoke room or stop by Miyajima Aquarium, which is just 10 minutes away from the Ryokan.
12. Hotel Green Spa Tsutsuga
Green Spa Tsustuga is situated right in Akiota, which is not far from Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and the Atomic Bomb Dome.
These 3-star ryokan are all Japanese-style rooms with tatami mats and connected toilets.
Being a ski-to-door accommodation, this is a great place to stay for families as they are able to do skiing, cycling, and hiking around the property.
If you’re not planning to stay here, you can also do a day trip to use the hot spring bath.
- Adults: 600 yen
- Children: 300 yen
- Infant: 100 yen (below 3 years old)
They do offer renting facilities if you decide not to bring your own towel.
However, if you’re looking for a private onsen in Hiroshima, there are other accommodations that feature that.
13. Kinoe Onsen HOTEL SEIFUKAN
This accommodation offers a sense of freedom to your mind and body. Situated in Osakikamijima, the beautiful onsen Hiroshima overlooks the Seto Inland Sea.
Enjoy open-air baths whilst you’re surrounded by nature. You’d soon be lost in time.
Transport yourself to visit another part of Japan with your family as you visit the Seto Inland Sea.
A variety of fresh ingredients are also being used at the restaurant.
For parents, wind down and relax as one of the most legendary bartenders from Tokyo is now working on this property.
14. Keishokan Sazanamitei
Keishokan Sazanmitei is another historical accommodation as it is located in the historic port of Tomonoura.
All the rooms come with a tatami and a flat-screen TV to enjoy whilst other rooms offer different scenic views like sea views and garden views.
You’d also be able to book yourself a room that comes with private open-air baths.
All guests are welcome to enjoy the hot spring bath that is located at the facility at the property.
If you are staying at another accommodation and would like to do a day trip to use the hot spring, you can do so here.
Most importantly, don’t forget to bring along a tripod so that you’ll be able to document your travels! You would want to capture those memories!
15. Aki Grand Hotel
Another great accommodation that you’d be able to admire is the view of the Seto Inland Sea.
Aki Grand Hotel also offers both Western and Japanese-style rooms up to your choice.
Japanese-style rooms are all fitted with tatami mats and futon beds for you to sleep on. WiFi is also available in all the rooms for you to stream freely.
If you’re worried about going out and about, don’t worry, as Aki Grand Hotel provides free shuttle service to and fro Miyajima Station.
Go on a night cruising tour of the World Heritage Site as a family activity.

As for the hot springs, there are public indoor hot springs for the whole family to use. However, like other hot spring facilities, they have segregated the male and female time.
If you’d like to use the hot spring as a family, it would be great to consider getting private open-air baths that you can get for 3,800 yen and use for 1 hour and 45 minutes.

16. Hotel Ofutei (4-Star Hotel)
A sister company of Keishokan Sazanmitei, it is also 400 meters from Tomonotsu Museum.
This 4-star accommodation comes with free WiFi and air-conditioned rooms and offers a beautiful sea view and outdoor pool.
For food, you can have a choice to opt for Western breakfast if you are not used to having Japanese breakfast.
Indulge your family in booking a suite room that comes with spacious rooms and an open-air bath.
This way, you and your family can have endless time in a hot spring bath on your own time.
Hotel Ofutei is also near Ota House and Fukuzen-ji Temple for you to explore nearby.
17. Migiwatei Ochi Kochi (4-Star Hotel)

Just a 5-minute walk from Tomonoura Bus Station, you’d also be able to get a free shuttle to and fro Fukuyama Station that you’d be able to get upon request.
Just let the front desk know that you’d like to get to the station and what time you’d leave from the hotel.
Filled with contemporary Japanese-style rooms, you can book a suite room that has an open-air bath for you and your family to rejuvenate.
If you’re staying in either one of the sister companies, you’re able to go on a ‘Hot Spring Tour Service’ and try out all 3 of the sister company’s baths!

18. Miyajima Grand Hotel Arimoto (4-Star Hotel)
Miyajima Grand Hotel Arimoto offers a choice between a luxurious Japanese style and Western rooms with an outdoor hot spring bath and karaoke.
Experience traditional futon bedding on a tatami floor when you opt for a Japanese-style room.
Take a family stroll from Itsukushima Shrine, which is just 3 minutes from the accommodation.
You’d also be able to get a free shuttle from Miyajima Pier, so traveling is not a hassle!
Surrender your body and soak in the hot spring after a long day. If you booked a room without an open-air bath, you could always use the hotel’s hot bath.
Much like other accommodations, the hot bath also comes with a men’s hot bath and a women’s hot bath at separate locations in the hotel.
Bring the family over to the historical Senjokaku Hall and Pagoda Goju-no-To, which is just a 5-minute walk from Miyajima Grand Hotel Arimoto.
19. Ryokan尾道西山 Onomichi Nishiyama (Onomichi) (4-Star Hotel)
If you’d like to stay at a place that truly showcases the culture of Onomichi, then this is the place to be.
To preserve the culture, Ryokan Onomichi provides a place that highly provides comfort, and warmth and provides accommodation with a garden.
All the rooms are decorated in a traditional quaint Japanese style room.
All rooms come with a hot spring bath, though in certain types of rooms, you get an open-air bath for the whole family to use.
You and your whole family can experience Onomichi cycling through the town.
The bicycles that can be rented are free for the guests and are available anytime between 6 am – 11 pm.
Other than that, you can also enjoy going on a leisure cruise on a small fishing boat that you’re able to go to from 7 am – 5 pm.
You can do this activity with the whole family at 5,000 yen per person.
20. Azumi Setoda (Onomichi) (4-Star Hotel)
Azumi Setoda is a long-run family estate of the Horiuchi family, a prominent merchant that thrived on salt production back in the earlier days.
Situated at Ikuchi Island, Azumi Setoda features a garden and rooms with a private hot spring bathtub.
However, if you’d like to experience a bigger hot spring, you’re able to go to Yubune bathing at no cost if you’re staying at Azumi Setoda.
Other activities you can do as a family are the Setoda Cultural Walking Tour, Boat Fishing, and even the Sunset Cruise.
You’re able to make these reservations once you’re there.
21. Sekitei @ Teien No Yado (5-Star Hotel)
Situated the opposite of Miyajima, this 5-star hotel features a spectacular garden.
Given the private aspect, there are only 12 guest rooms and the layout is different and special.
Out of all the 12 rooms, only 3 rooms have private indoor onsen baths, which are An-An, Oimatsu, and Kochu-An.
Hiroshima private onsen is one of the top-rated for couples and families to book.
You’re also able to use the public open-air onsen, but if you’d like the essence of privacy and the whole family to use it!
Though to save on accommodation, you can opt for private use at a chargeable fee.
22. LiVEMAX RESORT Miyahamaonsen-Ocean (4-Star Hotel)
LiVEMAX Resort is a spectacular place to stay with the family, as you’d get your own private onsen bath in any room you choose to book.
The accommodation features an outdoor swimming pool, fitness center, and garden that the whole family can use during their stay there.
Each room comes with air conditioning, flat-screen TV, free Wi-Fi, and a terrace with a sea view.
Depending on the type of rooms you book, some rooms even come with a kitchenette and a microwave.
This accommodation also has 3 open-air baths and 2 indoor onsen for the guests to use. A day trip is also available if you’re not staying in the resort.
However, if a lot of guests are occupying the hot spring, you may get denied.
23. Miyajima Kinsuikan (4-Star Hotel)
Kinsuikan is located in Miyajima and is only 2.6km away from Tsutsumigaura Beach. What I personally love about this ryokan is that each room provides a coffee machine.
How can one live without coffee, right?
Other than providing free WiFi, and air-conditioned rooms, you can also enjoy Asian breakfast that is inclusive when you make a booking.
There’s also a hot spring bath and public bath at Kinsuikan that gives a sense of serenity and tranquility.
The hot spring water contains seawater salt and a high retention heat that, after coming out from dipping in the bath, you’ll still feel warm!
It’s considered to be the best onsen in Hiroshima.
Unfortunately, this hotel only accepts children above 13 years old. You might want to reconsider other ryokans that I’ve suggested here if you have smaller children.

Is There An Onsen In Hiroshima?
You must have been wondering is there an onsen in Hiroshima, and the answer is yes! There’s plenty of onsen in Hiroshima around Miyajima, a district in Hiroshima. One of the oldest onsen was found and established in Miyajima, Iwaso ryokan, that’s located in the World Heritage Site of Itsukushima Shrine.
Can You Wear Clothes In An Onsen?
The answer to the question of can you wear clothes in an onsen is no. Most onsens require you to be fully naked as towels and clothing are considered dirty and cannot be brought inside the onsen. However, some ryokans make an exception to being completely naked and allow you to wear swimsuits.
Is Onsen Mixed Gender?
If you have been thinking is onsen mixed gender, it’s mostly segregated by gender these days. Traditionally, men and women can bathe in the same facility however, most ryokans now segregate the men and women into having their own hot springs. You can always book yourself a private onsen to be with your family.
