1. Wheelers

The first Instagrammable cafe in Penang is Wheelers.

This renowned Instagrammable cafe in Penang is located on Love Lane (within Georgetown’s UNESCO World Heritage Site), a street that is frequently visited by tourists. The idea behind their interior design is to unwind with bicycle art.

They feature a pretty comprehensive selection of meals (including but not limited to pizzas and pastas), snacks, and beverages at an affordable price.

Wheelers cafe is known to be one of the busiest cafes in Penang during the weekend.

Their meal portions here are pretty generous. So if you are a small eater, I would recommend that you tag along another foodie friend of yours to this cafe 🙂

2. The Mugshot Cafe

Located at one of the oldest roads in Georgetown, Chulia Street, the Mugshot Cafe is just next to Rainforest Bakery (also a must try if you have a sweet tooth).

This café upholds the idea of artistic independence. Instagrammers love this cafe because of its unique furnishings and feature wall that resembles the one on police scenes in movies when suspects get their mugshots captured.

Rumor has it that their bagel muffins are always in great demand and often sold out by midday especially during the weekends. So if you are keen to try those muffins, try to get there early 🙂

3. Kafka @ Kelawai Road

Kafka is one of the most recent attractions to Penang’s café scene. It is situated next to a villa that was formerly occupied by Flying Club Penang along Kelawei Road. Kafka has a stylish fusion of contemporary and unpolished industrial design.

If you are driving there, don’t worry about parking as despite the busyness of Kelawei Road there is plenty of parking available in the building itself.

In line with the decoration of this cafe (that is with a lot of plants), there are plenty of vegetarian options that you can choose from the menu as well.

  • Address: 15, Jalan Kelawai, George Town, 10250 George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia

4. Pace Coffee

Nestled on Beach Street, this cafe serves a variety of breakfast items such as toast, salads, waffles, and coffee in a modern yet simplistic and serene white setting.

I read somewhere recently that “Pace Coffee Penang sets the pace for cafes in Penang” and it sounded so right to me because since its recent inception in March 2021, Pace Cafe has always been consistently busy.

The decor of Pace Coffee has numerous woven-rattan accents to honor the iconic Seang Hin Leong Rattan & Bamboo Crafts (listed as Living Heritage Treasures by the Penang Heritage Trust), which is just two doors away from Pace Coffee.

Unpredictable weather in Malaysia is preventing you from planning a picnic? Wait no more as Utoo Boho Cafe comes to the rescue! This cafe offers picnic style seating in a very Boho fashion, I love it!

Every corner of this cafe is so extra (in a beautiful way) and super instagrammable! After visiting this cafe we might have to rethink if less is indeed more 😉

My friend who recently visited this cafe loved their Matcha Custard Croissant, so you might want to give it a shot if you are also a matcha lover!! There is also a vegan option available (Fungi Al Pomodoro) for the herbivores.

6. Kopi Hutan

Tired of sipping your coffee indoors and would like to do it while soaking in mother nature’s beauty? What if we take this up (literally) a few notch higher and also enjoy the hot cuppa from the highest cafe in Penang?

If this sounds interesting to you, then do visit Kopi Hutan (which literally means forest coffee in Malay language) in Penang.

This place is not in the city centre (unlike the majority of the other cafes listed on this page) and is in fact located in Penang Hill (that is also frequently visited by tourists). So the million dollar question could be, how do we get there?

First, get to Penang Hill (you could take a tram to get there) and from there (surrounding Owl Museum area) you could either take a free shuttle or walk to Monkey Cup Garden, which is 2 km away.

Kopi Hutan is located in the Monkey Cup Garden itself. If possible, do try to walk to Kopi Hutan instead of taking the shuttle as it is a picturesque path. So it is not only the cafe that is instagrammable, your journey to the cafe could also be equally instagrammable 😉

7. Norm Micro Roastery

This vegetarian friendly cafe is situated directly across from the Prestige Hotel, at the center of the business district in Georgetown.

Norm Micro Roastery is the place to be if you’re scouting for a modern, modest yet cool cafe for Instagram. This brand-new Penang cafe is located in a former shipping yard.

The atmosphere in Norm Micro Roastery is lovely and cool; it has an air of an Australian industrial industry with a high ceiling.

  • Address: 13, Gat Lebuh Gereja, George Town, 10300 George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia
  • This is how you can get there

P.S: The Prestige is a colonial Victorian-style inspired hotel, opposite Norm Micro Roastery. If you are looking for a fancy stay in Penang, I strongly suggest you check it out

8. Bean Sprout Cafe

If you are strolling around Georgetown, especially closeby Little India and Lebuh Cina, don’t hesitate to explore this hidden gem, you will love it!

Many reviews have also indicated that the staff at this cafe are enthusiastic and welcoming. The mugs used to serve the beverages are exquisite.

Its interior and exterior décor are also adored by many. The ground level has nicer chairs and a better layout, and the upper level offers a breathtaking view. In any case, the versatility of this cafe (generally and for instagram ;)) is commendable to me.

Ohh and their chocolate mint beverage is the best, do try it out.

9. Matcho Cafe

This adorable eatery with a tropical (green) ambiance and a splash of pink is a perfect fit for Instagram.

The surrounding of the cafe matches the color food and drinks served (mostly pink and green) as they specialize in Matcha drinks and cheesecakes, as well as Pink Toast that is garnished with pink cotton candy.

This cafe is located at Lebuh Nordin, Georgetown which is also where you can get the Penang famous signature star coffee at a stall (that is made without any fancy coffee equipment but tastes oh so delicious) by Everling Ang.

  • Address: 99 B, Lebuh Noordin, 10300, Georgetown, Penang.

10. Ome By Spacebar Coffee

Zucchini cake generally does not sound too appetizing but the one offered at Ome By Spacebar Coffee is SO GOOD that it will not only change but also blow your mind!!

This cafe is truly a small hidden gem tucked in one of the alleys at the heart of Penang’s Heritage City and has inviting vibes with lots of plants and greenery.

You will know right away that this is the ideal location for any coffee and instagram enthusiast, as soon as you enter the visually rustic environment that is also perfect for the mission to get insta-worthy shots 😉

11. P.66

At this cafe in Penang, P.66, you may sip tea while shopping for a wide selection of artisanal items and crafts & arts products.

Not only that, the tall plants at the cafe offer a calming flash of color to the space while adhering to its Japanese inspired elegant and minimalist aesthetic..that distinguishes it from other cafes & makes it perfect for the gram.. speak about versatility!

Alongside getting the perfect insta shot and adorable writing supplies, you can also consider purchasing a variety of high-quality mementos for loved ones or for yourself from the store.

12. Carnarvon Cafe

Experiencing this cafe is equivalent to experiencing a Georgetown history old house, as it is accompanied by similar set up and pattern of old wooden classic seats and furniture. This kind of surroundings is only possible in a heritage city such as Penang.

Not only is the surrounding of the cafe insta worthy, but the cakes served at this cafe (such as the beautiful and colorful watermelon cake) are equally instagrammable.

  • Address: 54, Lebuh Prangin, 10300, Georgetown, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia.

13. Chapel Street Cafe

This Australian inspired Chapel Street Cafe offers a broad selection of pastries, desserts, and a unique beverage called bubble milk tea.

The interior of this cafe has a vibe on its own. The seats in the cafe are however rather limited, so you’ll probably have to wait during busy times or on weekends.

This cafe is a terrific choice in any case whether you’re searching for a cozy and comfy cafe to relax at, or to get your caffeine fix or even simply to update your insta feed 😉

14. PikNik

Apart from being known as one of Penang’s instagrammable cafes, this retro concept cafe is famous for its cozy relaxing environment and for basic serving of pasta, coffee and waffles (burger waffle here is yummm) at an affordable price.

Piknik is primarily visited by a young crowd which includes college and university students. They relax at the cafe while playing card games and board games. The music played is great here and a good Wifi connection is available at this cafe.

Although this cafe might seem to have it all, one downside is the scarcity of parking which could be an issue. I would highly suggest that you either use a ride hailing platform services such as Grab or other public transportation to get here if possible.

15. Passion Heart Cafe

Despite the ever growing list of cafes in Penang, each one of them has its own distinct feature that separates them from the rest.

Passion Heart Cafe is just the same. Its simplicity and nyonya style setting is not only unique but also welcoming and would definitely attract anyone in. This also makes it perfect for your insta feed 🙂

Passion Heart Cafe offers a variety of cakes, mostly bursting with Malaysian flavors such as cempedak and durian. Their cempedak cheesecake is highly recommended by anyone that has visited the cafe and tried out the cake and is often rated 10/10.

  • Address: 23, Jalan A.S. Mansoor, 10050 George Town, Pulau Pinang
  • This is how you can get there

16. Narrow Marrow

I can’t be writing about instagrammable cafes in Penang without mentioning one of the most instagrammable cafes in Penang, that is Narrow Marrow.

Anyone that needs a coffee fix especially in late evening should visit this cafe as it is usually open between 3pm-11pm.  With its eccentric décor, Narrow Marrow attracts plenty of cafe-hoppers during the day, but the cafe/bar comes to life at night.

  • Address: 312, Lebuh Pantai, George Town, 10300 George Town, Pulau Pinang

17. Mangga At The Blue Mansion

Did you know that mangga is a Malay word that means “mango”. This cafe is nestled beneath a big mango tree on the grounds of Georgetown’s heritage palace (The Blue Mansion) which is where its name is derived from.

The play of colors between blue and yellow/orange set up at the cafe seem to describe the surroundings of the cafe which mostly includes The Blue Mansion and the said mango tree.

The cafe has an outdoor space and shows us that life can be a picnic if we allow it to be. It has a relaxing atmosphere as you go in, and the surroundings outside almost have a picnic atmosphere.

The Blue Mansion offers elegantly decorated boutique lodgings with vintage furnishings. It is situated in the UNESCO zone and the only one to have won the prestigious UNESCO Conservation & Heritage award. Fancy a stay there? Check it out here.
