Is Melaka Safe?
Yes, Melaka is safe. I’ve been to Melaka many times, even as a solo female traveler, and I always felt safe. But, as with any place, it’s important to be smart and take precautions to protect yourself and your stuff.
You should always keep an eye out for your surroundings, especially at night, and avoid walking alone in quiet or sketchy areas.
If you have valuables with you, keep them safe and secure, whether by using hotel-safe deposit boxes or stashing them in a tear-proof travel bag. Just for peace of mind, you know 🙂
Generally, Melaka has a relatively low crime rate. It is a safe and awesome place to visit, with tons of history and culture to explore. So don’t be afraid to check it out!
What’s The Best Time To Visit Melaka?
The best time to visit Melaka is April, May, and October during the dry season. The humidity is a bit low, and there’s not much rain.
But also Melaka has tropical weather, so it’s fairly sunny all year round, except with more rain during the Moonsoon months – keep in mind it also sometimes rains during the dry season.
Another thing to remember is that the end of December is considered the peak season for tourism in Melaka.
Around Christmas and New Year especially, people come to Melaka to experience the unique atmosphere in the Portuguese Settlement during the holidays.
Plus festive season usually comes with long public holidays for Malaysians, and Melaka is a popular local tourist destination as well.
So keep in mind that hotels and flights will be more expensive during these times. But if you plan ahead, you can snag some good deals. I like using Viator and Get Your Guide to plan my trips and excursions.
On the other hand, after the busiest festive season, from the end of February to March, tourist traffic tends to slow down. So this could be the best time to visit Melaka for the best hotel and flight deals.
What Do I Pack For Melaka?
- Light, breathable clothing since it’s a tropical climate – sundresses, tank tops, and shorts, are a good idea

- Cover-up for when you go to the spa and pool area
- Swimsuits (if planning to swim) – check out this cute one-piece and these trunks
- Comfortable walking sandals or sneakers so you can explore Melaka comfortably
- Sun protection like sunglasses, sunscreen, and hats
- A small umbrella or poncho, if you’re coming during rainy season
- Water bottle to stay hydrated on the go – a collapsible one is best!

- International adapter if your country uses a different power outlet than Malaysia (plug type G, which is the plug that has three rectangular pins in a triangular pattern)
- Power banks so your phone doesn’t run out of charge as you’re out and about
- Necessary medications – but check that they are allowed into Malaysia!
- Insect repellent to keep those pesky mosquitos away
- Travel first aid kit
There you have it – There you have it – 21 Melaka hotel with bathtub. You can relax peacefully and even read a book or watch a movie in these hotel rooms – all part of a wholesome Melaka holiday.
Most of the places are spread throughout the city, and you can find them near all the major attractions, so you don’t have to worry about being too far away from all the action!
Unless, of course, that’s what you want, and that’s where standalone places like The Orchard Wellness & Health Resort Melaka will fit in perfectly.

Melaka (Malacca) Travel Planning Guide
Getting To Melaka
- By plane: The nearest airport to Melaka is the Senai International Airport which is about 80 km from Melaka – you can land there and take a bus or a taxi to Melaka. Or you can get to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL), which is about 150 km from Melaka, and from there, you can take a bus or a train to Melaka.
- By bus: You can get to Melaka by bus from many major cities like Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru. It takes about 2 hours from Kuala Lumpur and 2.5 hours from Johor Bahru. You can find schedules and book tickets online.
- By car: You can drive to Melaka via the North-South Highway. Many people make this drive from KL daily so just remember that it’s a busy highway, especially during public holidays in Malaysia – it can take you 2 to 3 times longer to reach your destination!
- By train: There are several trains from major cities in Peninsular Malaysia to the Melaka Sentral station – you can check the schedule and prices on Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) site.
Seasons And Weather
- It’s an all round tropical climate in Melaka, but it’s categorized into two seasons: dry and wet.
- The dry season is from April to October, and it’s not too bad temperature-wise. The humidity is a bit low, and there’s not much rain.
- May and June are the hottest months, and you might find it uncomfortable to travel during these months if you’re not used to hot weather.
- Between November and March, it’s the monsoon season, so it can get rainy and wet. But pack right and bring an umbrella or poncho and you will be alright. Of course, if it’s storming, stay indoors!
Transport
- Try not to take a taxi cos it will cost you a bomb – especially if it’s evident that you’re a tourist (just tourist trap things). If it’s a short distance, then it should be fine.
- You can enjoy getting around with a trishaw if it’s a close-by destination or just to take in the entire city from a different point of view. Otherwise, renting a car or bike to go around on your own is not a bad idea.
- You can also opt for car-hailing apps like Grab (similar to Uber).
Places To Visit
- Melaka was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Walking around the city, you will see many historical sites but be sure not to miss A Famosa– a ruined Portuguese fortress, St. Paul’s Church – a 17th-century church, and Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, the oldest temple in Malaysia.
- If you want to learn more about Melaka’s Peranakan culture, visit The Baba and Nyonya Heritage Museum, which is a restored 19th-century townhouse that gives insight into the lives of the Peranakan Chinese community in Melaka.
- Visit the popular Jonker Street for some local culture; there are many quaint shops and restaurants here.
- Take a leisurely cruise down the Melaka River.
- Have a sunny day out at Pantai Klebang, Melaka’s beach with scenic views.
- You can get organized tours to ensure you cover all the important bits of Melaka in the best way. I like to use Viator and Get Your Guide for their variety of options and deals.
Food And Drinks
- Melaka is known for its unique blend of Nyonya, Malay, Chinese, and Portuguese cuisines. Many of the local food is quite spicy, so if you’re not used to it, do ask for less spicy. There are tons of local food in Melaka, but here are some of the hits:
- Nyonya Cuisine: A mix of Chinese and Malay flavors. Try dishes like otak-otak, a fish cake wrapped in banana leaves, or ayam pongteh, which is a chicken stew cooked in soy sauce and fermented bean paste.
- Assam Pedas: A fish dish with a sour and spicy kick to it, thanks to the tamarind and chili used to make it.
- Satay Celup: Skewers of various meats and seafood dipped in a boiling pot of peanut sauce.
- Cendol: A popular dessert made with a mixture of finely crushed ice, rice flour jelly, coconut milk, and palm sugar syrup.
- Teh Tarik/ Teh C Special: Sweetened tea drinks made by ‘pulling’ the tea and adding lots of condensed milk – ask for less sweet cos it can get almost too sweet for most!
