Looking to escape the hot weather in Johor but not sure where to go? Why not consider ice skating at one of the largest ice skating rinks in Malaysia?

Spring Labs is a developed retail concept park that makes it an excellent location for romantic dates or casual hanging out with your friends and family. The buildings here are built using repurposed shipping containers and refurbished into vibrant European-styled buildings.

As you explore the area, you will find an abundance of insta-worthy areas and backdrops where you can take beautiful photos.

You will be spoilt with choice as this place is loaded with many eateries, ranging from trendy Western-inspired restaurants and cafes to local cuisines. Have you watched the Angry Birds movie? Are you a massive fan of the popular Angry Birds game app? Then you must not miss out on the Angry Birds Activity Park nestled in Komtar JBCC.

You can head over to their Adventure park to challenge yourself on the longest suspension adventure rope course in Malaysia for those of you who are feeling adventurous. There are a total of 7 different routes that feature 51 different types of obstacles such as zip line, rope trapeze, need-wood crossing, and many more that awaits you.

If you feel the itch to have a little friendly competition with your friends, you may want to consider going on a race with your friends at the Permas Go-Kart.

The curve sky bridge features a see-through glass floor that allows you to take a stroll while enjoying the Johor Bahru skyline’s breathtaking view.

Skyscape is the first-ever attraction in Johor Bahru to feature an “Aerial Entertainment Space.”

You get to experience some common activities such as the Virtual Reality Games, Floor Interactive Games, and a mini-theater. I’m pretty sure these are not some of the activities one gets to experience while 149m above the ground.

If you are tired of exploring Johor Bahru city, you can consider going on a one-day road trip to Kluang to hike Gunung Lambak for a fresh change of scenery.

About one and a half-hour drive from Johor Bahru City Centre and with a height of 510m, Gunung Lambak is a popular trekking trail among the locals and tourists. It offers many routes and tracks depending on your fitness level and takes roughly between 2-4 hours to hike to the summit, where you get to enjoy a view of Kluang town.

The hiking trail is short and easy. Once you reach the end of the trail, you will be rewarded with a view of this stunning blue lake and its surrounding.

22. Hutan Bandar Recreational Park

Hutan Bandar Recreational Park is an urban forest recreational park suitable for the old and young.

Come early in the morning to enjoy a morning walk or exercise with your friends and family surrounded by lush green trees, flowers, and plants. After that, you can rest or enjoy an outdoor breakfast at one of the food stalls, which offers all kinds of local delicacies.

24. Noah’s Ark Natural Animal Shelter

Are you an animal lover? Then you must visit Noah’s Ark Natural Animal Shelter.

This animal sanctuary offers shelter to around 1000 animals, including dogs, cats, horses, primates, and boar.

Unlike other animal shelters, this place does not constraint the animals to a particular area. Instead, they can roam freely on a 10-acre size land. Noah’s Ark is also a massive advocate of no-kill policy.

25. Johor Zoo

Officially opened on April 1, 1962, the Johor Zoo was one of the first built zoos in Southeast Asia. It is situated only 1km from Johor Bahru City Centre.

The zoo at present has more than 100 species shown in 28 exhibits in the zoo. You will get a chance to interact with some of the animals during the feeding show.

You can explore several exciting places when you visit this heritage district: the High Court Building, the Chinese Heritage Museum (see below), Jalan Dhoby, and Jalan Tan Hiok Nee.

Declared as a ‘heritage street’ in 2009 by the Johor State government, do you know that Jalan Tan Hiok Nee is named after an influential and wealthy leader of the Chinese community who is a textile, pepper, and gambier merchant in the 19th century?

While exploring the spectacular architecture of the colonial buildings, keep an eye out for colorful murals scattered around this area.

27. Chinese Heritage Museum

This place is highly recommended for anyone interested to learn about the history of the Chinese community in Johor.

Also known as the Tiong Hua Museum, this four-story museum shares Chinese settlement history in Johor Bahru.

You get to learn about how different Chinese communities settled in Johor Bahru and how they started making a living here 100-150 years ago when the city is still mostly surrounded by jungle.

There are also many rare artifacts and collections such as porcelains, photos, old coins, and weapons for you to learn more in-depth about Chinese history, culture, and traditions.

28. Johor Bahru Kwong Siew Heritage Gallery

Another Johor Bahru places to go if you want to learn more specifically about the Cantonese clan’s history is the Johor Bahru Kwong Siew Heritage Gallery. The museum is situated between two traditional houses dating back to the year 1907.

This building was used as the headquarters of the Kwong Siew Clan Association, established in 1878 and presided by a prominent Chinese-born successful entrepreneur and businessman, Wong Ah Fook, who had a close relationship with the Johor Sultanate.

Fun fact: There’s also a road next to the building that is named after him called Jalan Wong Ah Fook.

You will find photographs, working tools, traditional Chinese opera costumes, antique opium pipes, and ancestry items that belonged to the Wong family in this museum.

29. Johor Old Chinese Temple

Within the museums’ vicinity mentioned above, you can pay a visit to one of the oldest and iconic Chinese temples in Johor, filled with a rich history.

Constructed in the 19th century, this temple symbolizes peace and unity and serves all the five central dialectical Chinese communities in the city (Hakka, Cantonese, Teochew, Hokkien, and Hainanese).

Fun fact: Guess who is the founder of this temple? It was Tan Hiok Nee!

Run by the family’s third generation, all the buns and banana cake are freshly baked using the traditional charcoal baking method passed down by their great-grandfather.

One box of the banana cake costs RM10 ($2.50) while one pack of buns costs around RM4-RM5 (around $1.00).

Pro tip: Come early to avoid a long queue and missing out on the yummy banana cake. It is usually sold out by 10:00 a.m.

Over here, you must try their famous triangular-shaped curry puffs (a traditional local Malay snack). The curry puffs come with a selection of either chicken, beef, or lamb and are filled with curry potatoes and onions.

This stunning and uniquely designed temple was opened in 1922 and is considered an important place of worship among the Hindu community. Inside the temple, you will notice the Hinduism deities and a mixture of other religions’ deities sculptures.

You will need to be barefooted to enter the temple, and the entrance fee is RM10 ($2.50).

Although you can’t enter the palace, you can visit their grand and well-manicured gardens and water fountain outside the palace. If you drop by the place at night, you will be treated with an impressive night view from the light decorating the gardens and surroundings.

Another visually striking landmark of this place is the Crown Arch (a replica of the crown of Sultan Johor) at the palace’s main entrance. There are real jewels assembled in it!

The restaurant is a traditional Chinese-style eatery. You can easily recognize the diner as it always has a long queue outside (especially during lunch hours), but their service is prompt, and the food is served very fast.

Their signature dish is curry fish head which has over 25 years of history. You can only choose to replace the fish head with a fishtail. The food is freshly prepared after the order is placed.

Unique Tips You Should Know When Visiting JB, Malaysia

Johor Chingay Street Parade, recognised as a National Cultural Heritage, is one of the most anticipated events. The Chingay is an annual event that celebrates the birthdays of each of the five Chinese clans’ Chinese deities and signifies the end of Chinese New Year (on the night of the 18th day of the Lunar New Year).

The deities will be mounted onto sedans and carried around a predetermined route around Johor Bahru. The Chinese community believes that this parade will bring them luck, prosperity, good health and harmony throughout the year.

During the procession, you will see many other traditional Chinese cultural activities such as lion dance, dragon dance, giant flashy floats and huge waving flags. This event draws nearly 400,000 visitors and participants with national and foreign live TV coverage.

The Sultan of Johor is a car enthusiast. Back in 2012, he forked out RM 520,000 ($128,300) and won the bid for the car number plate ‘WWW 1’.

Four years later, in 2016, he won another bid for the highly coveted car number plate ‘V 1’ for a price close to one million ringgit, equivalent to close to $250,000!
