Looking to escape the hot weather in Johor but not sure where to go? Why not consider ice skating at one of the largest ice skating rinks in Malaysia? 

If you are an amateur or want to experience ice skating, I’m sure you will enjoy the experience of skating on real ice rather than synthetic ice used in some of the ice skating rinks out there.

19. Gunung Lambak

If you are tired of exploring Johor Bahru city, you can consider going on a one-day road trip to Kluang to hike Gunung Lambak for a fresh change of scenery.

This animal sanctuary offers shelter to around 1000 animals, including dogs, cats, horses, primates, and boar. 

Unlike other animal shelters, this place does not constraint the animals to a particular area. Instead, they can roam freely on a 10-acre size land. Noah’s Ark is also a massive advocate of no-kill policy.

This building was used as the headquarters of the Kwong Siew Clan Association, established in 1878 and presided by a prominent Chinese-born successful entrepreneur and businessman, Wong Ah Fook, who had a close relationship with the Johor Sultanate. 

Fun fact: There’s also a road next to the building that is named after him called Jalan Wong Ah Fook.

Kwon Siew Heritage Gallery

You will find photographs, working tools, traditional Chinese opera costumes, antique opium pipes, and ancestry items that belonged to the Wong family in this museum.

The entrance fee is RM5 ($1.30) for adults and RM2 ($0.50) for children/senior citizens.

30. Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque

The mosque is built on top of a hill overlooking the Straits of Johor. Taking nearly eight years to complete, the mosque’s intricate architecture style is a unique combination of Victorian, Moorish, and Malay elements. 

The area of the mosque can accommodate up to 2000 worshippers. Another prominent feature of the mosque is its four minarets that look like the Colonial-era British clock towers.

31. Istana Besar

Founded back in 1919, this 100-year-old halal bakery shop is a MUST visit if you are Johor Bahru.

Famous for its fluffy soft banana cake and buns that come in different flavors (coconut, red bean, kaya, peanut, etc.), this bakery is a favorite among locals tourists.

Run by the family’s third generation, all the buns and banana cake are freshly baked using the traditional charcoal baking method passed down by their great-grandfather.

One box of the banana cake costs RM10 ($2.50) while one pack of buns costs around RM4-RM5 (around $1.00).

Pro tip: Come early to avoid a long queue and missing out on the yummy banana cake. It is usually sold out by 10:00 a.m.

Close as Hiap Joo Bakery & Biscuit Bakery is Salahuddin Bakery, a Muslim and Chinese bakery that uses an old-fashion wood-fired oven to bake pastries, bread, and buns.

Over here, you must try their famous triangular-shaped curry puffs (a traditional local Malay snack). The curry puffs come with a selection of either chicken, beef, or lamb and are filled with curry potatoes and onions.

35. Arulmigu Sri Rajakaliamman Glass Temple

Most people are unaware of this but do you know that the world’s first-ever Hindu Temple covered with glass is located in Johor Bahru? 

The Arulmigu Sri Rajakaliamman temple is truly a sight to behold. The whole temple is decorated with around 300,000 pieces of colored mosaic glasses.

This stunning and uniquely designed temple was opened in 1922 and is considered an important place of worship among the Hindu community. Inside the temple, you will notice the Hinduism deities and a mixture of other religions’ deities sculptures.

38. Pasir Gudang Kite Museum

Pasir Gudang Kite Museum is a place where you can learn about kites’ history and cultural impact from different countries.

February is the perfect time to visit the kite museum as the Annual International Kite Festival is held annually during this period. The festival has engaged kite lovers from all over the world to take part in it. Various colorful and unique kites made up of different materials such as paper and bamboo can be seen floating in the air.

 The museum’s admission fee is affordable and reasonable. It is only RM2 (USD   

 0.50) for adults and RM1 (USD 0.30) for children (7-12 years old).

This Roman Catholic church is one of the oldest churches in Johor and features an alone steeple with a spire on the top. The church’s architecture featured a traditional British colonial style and was constructed in 1927.

40. Bukit Serene Palace

Dating back to 1933, Bukit Serene Palace is currently the official residence of the Sultan of Johor. The building architecture is a combination of Malay and European taste inspired by the Art Deco style. The Johor Military Forces also guard the palace.

Although you can’t enter the palace, you can visit their grand and well-manicured gardens and water fountain outside the palace. If you drop by the place at night, you will be treated with an impressive night view from the light decorating the gardens and surroundings.

Another visually striking landmark of this place is the Crown Arch (a replica of the crown of Sultan Johor) at the palace’s main entrance. There are real jewels assembled in it!

As the name suggests, Taman Merdeka is a recreational park to honor and remember the struggle Malaysians went through to achieve independence back in 1957.

Unique Tips You Should Know When Visiting JB, Malaysia

  • Johor Chingay Street Parade, recognised as a National Cultural Heritage, is one of the most anticipated events. The Chingay is an annual event that celebrates the birthdays of each of the five Chinese clans’ Chinese deities and signifies the end of Chinese New Year (on the night of the 18th day of the Lunar New Year). 

The deities will be mounted onto sedans and carried around a predetermined route around Johor Bahru. The Chinese community believes that this parade will bring them luck, prosperity, good health and harmony throughout the year. 

During the procession, you will see many other traditional Chinese cultural activities such as lion dance, dragon dance, giant flashy floats and huge waving flags. This event draws nearly 400,000 visitors and participants with national and foreign live TV coverage.

Four years later, in 2016, he won another bid for the highly coveted car number plate ‘V 1’ for a price close to one million ringgit, equivalent to close to $250,000!
