Italian Outfits Winter: Winter Coats/Jackets

Coats

You cannot go without coats if you’re planning a trip to Italy in winter. Picture thick, woolen peacoats or overcoats. Yeah, that’s what you need for the winters in Italy.

You’ll need a couple of layers under the coat so it’s better to purchase one that could accommodate layering without you looking like a penguin!

Single as well as double-breasted coats are quite in style, along with the fur-lined coats.

Something to keep in mind for your trip is to carry a waterproof/water-resistant jacket/coat as well. It can rain quite heavily in the winter and I’m sure you wouldn’t appreciate being soaked to the bone in the chilly Italian weather.

Although neutral colors are the most popular, Italians love to play a mix and match with colors, so don’t be surprised if you spot women wearing monotoned clothes with a wine red or perhaps an emerald green coat.

Jackets

While coats are enough to keep you warm in South or Central Italy, you will need puffer jackets to tackle the freezing temperatures of the North.

I prefer down-filled puffer jackets as they provide insulation against the cold and are lightweight, providing much-needed warmth and comfort in harsh weather.

Layering is extremely crucial if you want to enjoy the winters in Italy, and that’s why you need to pack plenty of sweaters that can keep you warm as there will be a significant difference in the temperatures of northern and southern Italy.

Turtlenecks, cardigans, and sweaters are an absolute must for winter as the temperatures can be freezing.

Knitwear made of Cashmere or Merino wool is ideal for Italy’s harsh winter as they are super warm, breathable, and non-itchy. Go for classy colors to fit in with the locale.

Italian Outfits Winter: Skirts & Trousers

Jeans

You may not believe it, but denim jeans are super popular in Italy. Though they look casual, if worn in combination with a well-fitting sweater/blouse, overcoat, and a pair of ankle or knee-high boots, they can give a very polished impression.

The best way to flaunt them without catching a cold is by wearing ones with inner fleece lining.

Add a pair of sunglasses, chunky jewelry, a hat, and a pair of comfortable ankle boots and you’re all set for a fancy outing!

You can pair the pants with a warm knit top and an overcoat to complement the look.

Skirts

Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be dressy right? Especially when you’re in Italy, where everyone is always dressed to kill.

I’d recommend you to take some warm skirts, which you can pair with fleece-lined sheer leggings. Midi or maxi pleated and plaid skirts will look elegant enough against Rome’s aesthetic backdrop.

Italian Outfits Winter: Footwear

Boots

Italians are known for their specific taste in fashion, and that extends to footwear. During your time in Italy, you’ll find most women going about in leather boots of some kind, be it ankle boots, knee-high ones, suede boots, or lace-up ones.

No matter what you choose, be sure that they are comfortable for walking as you’ll be able to explore the cities better when on foot and you definitely don’t want to put a damper on your mood due to sore feet.

Make sure to keep a pair that’s resistant to snow and rain, as you never know when the weather may take a turn in Italy.

Snow Shoes/Boots

Staying at a ski resort in Turin in the middle of winter is the dream, isn’t it?

But your regular leather boots won’t be ideal for an adventurous skiing/snowboarding experience. You’ll need a pair of boots that will keep your feet warm and are snow resistant, and snow shoes/boots are the best option.

Snow boots have superior grip that will allow you to walk easily through the snow, will be cozy, and prevent frostbite.

From my experience, a pair of snugly fitting, warm woolen socks can do wonders for you in winter. Pair your boots with woolen socks and be on your merry way enjoying the trip!

Italian Outfits Winter: Accessories

Scarves

An essential part of Italian outfits for winter is a scarf. Most of the local women you come across will have a scarf as it gives a fashionable look whilst protecting you from the cold.

What if you’re planning a trip to the Alps in the middle of winter?

The northern parts of Italy are much colder than the south and you’ll need much warmer clothes as well. You will need to carry a couple of beanies or winter hats for protection against the snow and cold.

Crossbody Bags/Purses

Crossbody bags are your best bet when you’re looking for fancy options with adequate space. The best part is that these bags are in trend in Italy.

From a safety point of view, a crossbody is quite secure and you won’t stick out like a sore thumb as a tourist unlike with a backpack.

For a fun outing during the daytime, or a luxury night out, I like carrying a clutch or a tote bag as it makes my attire feel more elegant.

To complement their clothes, Italians love to add a dash of color to their accessories which is why you can spot women with brightly colored handbags.

Leather Gloves

An essential item to include in your travel bag is a pair of snug leather gloves. Snowfall is frequent, especially in the higher reaches and I’m sure you want to avoid any sort of frostbite. Make sure the gloves are resistant to the water.

What To Avoid Wearing In Italy?

  • Flip-flops are an absolute no-no in Italy unless you’re at the beach. Italians like to dress up and it’ll be easy to know that you’re a tourist.
  • Though sandals with socks are quite common in the US, you won’t find anyone wearing them in Italy as they don’t look classy. If you decide to opt for sandals or open-toed shoes, go without socks.
  • Do not bring athleisure and sportswear for your trip to Italy. Casual wear is quite uncommon in Italy and you may feel out of place.
  • Avoid wearing outfits that are above the knee or expose the shoulder to be respectful towards the culture of the country.
  • Italians consider shorts to be too casual and only wear them at the beach. Avoid wearing shorts on the streets.
  • Take a scarf with you if you plan to visit religious sites. It’s distasteful to visit the places without covering your head.
  • Avoid carrying a fanny pack or backpack while exploring the cities as that’ll make it easier to pinpoint you as a tourist.
  •  Avoid wearing baseball caps as they are too casual and will make you look like a tourist.
