2.When to Apply to Fully-Funded Scholarships?

Well, the short answer is: It depends. Sorry, we can’t avoid the cliché here!

You have to check the deadlines of your desired programs, but we would advise you to start your applications around October of the year before you plan to start your degree.

Is common to find fully-funded scholarships having deadlines in the first trimester of the year, especially in Europe. But the Chevening Scholarships for studying in the UK, for example, have deadlines around November 10.

But how do you find these sought-after scholarships? Let’s have a look.

3.How to Find Fully-Funded Scholarships?

These scholarships are usually offered by governments, universities, and/or their sponsors, alumni or associates, and none governmental entities of the city where the uni is located.

In the first case, there’s usually a higher number of awards so if you apply to different ones (and you should), definitely apply to government scholarships.

You have two options to find fully-funded scholarships:

In some cases, you will need to apply separately to both the university and the scholarship (ex. Chinese Government scholarship, Chevening Scholarships).

In others, all it takes is to click on a checkbox assigned to each scholarship the university offers, while applying to one of their programs.

4.What Do You Need to Apply to a Fully-Funded Scholarship

Well, it’s REALLY important to read carefully the scholarship requirements regarding what documents to present and the formatting, since every country and program is different.

Usually, if you have to apply separately, fully-funded scholarship programs for both undergraduate and postgraduate students will require the following documents:

4.1. A University Admission Letter

Although not always. You need to check the deadlines of both universities and scholarships carefully so you can know when to apply if you need this document.

In some cases, when applying to the university program of your choice, you’ll be automatically eligible for certain scholarships if you meet their requirements.

4.2. Cover Letter or Scholarships Essay

This one of the most important ones! This is where they can assess your personality.

4.3. Proof of Language

If you’re going to study abroad, you should have a high proficiency in English at the very least, my friend. Many of the programs in foreign countries are offered in English, especially Master’s degrees.

The university will demand you pass an official test (IELTS, TOEFL, etc.) if you’re not a native speaker and the scholarship may ask for it too.

But what if English is not your forte?

Worry not!

You can take the program in the local language, and spend a year or two learning it before you start your actual program. Many scholarships cover this extra year, others do not.

Research properly and just in case, study English: this will always be a smart inversion.

4.4. Curriculum Vitae

This fancy document is also important. Here you will write down your previous studies, skills, extracurricular activities, awards you have won, volunteer experiences, etc.

Keep in mind the formatting of the CV they’ll ask you to provide.

4.5. Recommendation Letters

These are a great reminder of why you need to be a good student enough for your teachers to notice you.

Recommendation letters state a more personal perspective of you. The professor you ask to write them should be someone that has witnessed your hard work, talents, and skills firsthand.

That’s why your thesis (or other important projects) supervisor is the ideal person for this.

However, there’s a huge number of students that either don’t research enough or don’t read the application guidelines properly and make mistakes when applying.

This is why our first tip is:

7.1 Read Those Guidelines

And read them well! Knowing what to do, how to do it, and when to do it, will make the difference between the scholarship selection committee discarding your application and stepping into the next round of evaluation.

7.2 Apply to Several Programs

We also suggest that you apply to every single fully-funded scholarship you are eligible for, to increase your chances of being selected.

Is important to note that although you can compete with students from all over the world for an award, you should also look for where you may have greater chances to be awarded.

There are Region-specific scholarships, country-specific scholarships, subject-specific scholarships, student-specific scholarships, etc., and applying to them can improve your chances of winning because you’ll be competing with a lesser number of students.

If you and another student have similar GPAs, Curriculum Vitae, and extracurricular activities, they will use the Cover Letter to tie-break both applications.

For example, the Chevening Scholarship is particularly interested in leadership.

They have awarded students that ended up being President of their countries! So, in your cover letter to them, give them proof of your leadership skills (this is an important set of skills to have by the way, and very sought after by employers too).

But as soon as some site asks you for any sort of payment, susceptible information of yours (like bank accounts information), or they say that your scholarship is guaranteed, you better close that tab.
