On our way up to St Paul’s Church, we chanced upon the Melaka Sultanate Palace Museum at the foot of St Paul’s hill. It was fascinating to see showcase items from Malacca’s history, such as weapons, photos, musical instruments, and foreign gifts.

2. Baba Nyonya Heritage Museum
Next on the list is a visit to the Baba Nyonya Heritage Museum.
Baba Nyonya or Peranakan is a blend of culture from intermarriages between the local Malays and Chinese Merchants. This museum is privately owned and displays the culture and history of Baba Nyonya.
You may book a 45-minute guided tour here if you want a deeper understanding of the artifacts displayed in the museum.

3. Maritime Museum
Maritime Museum was the best museum. Why? Also known as Flor de la Mar, this museum replicates the Portuguese ship sunk in 1511 off Sumatra. The entrance ticket also includes admission to the Maritime Museum.

4. Melaka Submarine Museum
Another museum that was a hit with my kids was the Melaka Submarine Museum, made out of a decommissioned submarine. This submarine is believed to be used to train the Royal Malaysian Navy crews between 2005 and 2009.
This museum is a continuation of the Maritime Museum.
Tip: Do note that the adults found walking inside a little cramped, but the kids found it intriguing to walk through the submarine. Don’t forget to check out on display two fighter jets next to the submarine.

5. Malaysia Architecture Museum
Being an architect, this was one of the museums for me to visit.
The building consists of two floors. The ground floor has a section on indigenous beliefs. In contrast, the second floor has information on building materials and the architectural language of the different states in Malaysia.

6. Cheng Ho’s Cultural Museum
Located within the old part of Malacca town and near Jonker Street, Cheng Ho’s Cultural Museum has about two to three hundred years of history and is architecturally inspired by Ming architecture.

11. Melaka Straits Mosque
Another mosque worth visiting is the Melaka Straits Mosque or known as the “Floating Mosque.” Located on an artificial island in the Melaka Straits, the building looks ‘floating’ over the waters.
A friendly reminder to dress appropriately if you intend to visit the mosque’s prayer hall to get a glimpse of the exquisite architecture in detail. If you are unsure on the dress code ethics, you can opt to join the guided tour.

12. Kampung Kling Mosque
Built-in 1748, Kampung Kling Mosque is one of the oldest mosques in Malaysia. Originally built as a wooden building, it was rebuilt in brick in 1872.
Kampung Kling Mosque got its name from where the Indian traders used to dwell.

13. Cheng Hoon Teng Temple
Not to be missed, Cheng Hoon Teng Temple is the oldest temple still functioning in the country. It also received a UNESCO award in 2003 for its architectural restoration.
The best time for visiting is during the Chinese New Year or winter solstice, which usually falls on the last week of December.

14. Sri Poyyatha Vinayaga Moorthy Temple
Built-in the 1780s, Sri Poyyatha Vinayaga Moorthy Temple is the oldest functioning Hindu temple in Maritime Southeast Asia.
This temple is situated in “Harmony Street” or Jalan Tukang Emas, also where Kampung Kling Mosque and Cheng Hoon Teng Temple are located.

Masjid Tengkera was built in 1728, with its original structure made of timber from Kalimantan. The interior consists of Chinese, Indonesian and Malay elements.

20. Padang Kemunting Turtle Management Center
Established in 1990, Padang Kemunting Turtle Management Center is managed by the Department of Fisheries Melaka.
The center houses one of the most beautiful turtles in the works, the Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys Imbricata). This would be an excellent place for the kids to learn more on turtle hatching and its life cycle.

This is not your typical zoo outdoors! Here, the zoo is brought indoors in this quirky cafe where you can interact with different wildlife, such as sugar gliders, chameleons, iguanas, and even snakes.

A must-go with the kids. Explore the safari within an enclosed truck with the tigers, giraffes, and elephants roaming around you.
My kids enjoyed the wild, wild west performance in the Old West Cowboy Town setting which is also part of the entrance ticket. The cowboys and Red Indians fired lots of gunshots during the show!

25. Stadthuys Square
One of the most iconic landmarks in Melaka is the Stadthuys, painted in terracotta red color. Built by the Dutch in 1650, the Stadthuys served the Dutch Governor and Deputy governor as their office.
Currently, the building houses the Museum of History and Ethnography Melaka, which portrays the different ethnicities in the city.

Christ Church is located just opposite the Stadthuys. The church’s construction took 12 years to be completed, from 1741.

Me and my kids at the end of the Jonker Walk during the weekend. Jonker Walk becomes a night market every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 6pm to 12am.

What other best way to explore the Melaka River other than by foot? Here is a selfie of me strolling by the Melaka river. This is an excellent way to get the kids to enjoy the fresh air while experiencing street life in Melaka.
The Oceanarium, Dutch Square, and many bridges are major attractions along the way. One of the bridges is the Chan Koon Cheng bridge which links China Town to Melaka’s Little India district.
Don’t forget to try Cendol Kampung Hulu situated along the Melaka River. This cendol is unique as it is prepared using frozen coconut milk and then blended. Choose among nine different toppings made from local fruits.
